Coffee Roasting

A month or so ago Drew Moody from corner of the cafe gave me some great advice about developing a more refined pallette.

Man that sounds sort of fancy.  I just wanted to learn how to pick out the different flavors in coffee.

His advice was not want I was expecting but made complete sense.

Drew’s Advice:

  1. Use your words
  2. Quit smoking
  3. Drink more water and less carbonated drinks;
  4. Eat less spicy food, junk food, etc.; and most of all,
  5. Go to the grocery store, buy a bunch of different fruits, sweets, vegetables, etc., taste them all and write your descriptors. Experience each bite and really pay attention to what your taste buds are telling you.

Taste is connected to memory. So when you drink a coffee in the future, your brain will automatically start going through its Rolodex of flavor descriptors.

So following point number five our very understanding wife, picked up a wide range citris fruit the next time she was at the farmers market.

Here is what we got

  • Lime
  • Lemon
  • Tangarine
  • Clemintine
  • Mandarine orange
  • Orange

It was very cool to try all of the flavors side by site.

Particularly the varieties of oranges.

What We learned

Very glad we tried it, have a long way to go.  I think through these simple experiments and tests we are learning a lot.

Have you ever tried something like this before? What was your experience?

What flavor group should we try next?
