As the pourover craze really started to take hold in 2008-2010, a little company called Bonavita jumped on the early bandwagon and rolled out one of the first commercially successful digital, temperature controlled, pour over, gooseneck spout kettle (whew, that’s a mouthful). They introduced the kettle in 2010, and it was an immediate hit, and soon to be followed by a Hario model and a few others.

In the past six years, we’ve seen a variety of variable temperature electric kettles for pourover come out, ranging from $80 to $300 or more. Some had a plethora of smart features and really nice industrial design, some looked like an engineer designed them with way too many buttons and obscure featuritis.

This past year, OXO, the company known for their ubiquitous lineup of kitchen gadgets and accessories, has been really getting into the specialty coffee market for accessories, brewers, and they even have a new line of OXO: ON products that are powered by electricity. They’ve rolled out SCA certified auto drip coffee brewers, cold coffee brewers, pour over coffee makers and stovetop gooseneck kettles for pour over.

They’ve also come out with a new digital, variable temperature, manual pour over gooseneck kettle (whew!); they call it their OXO: ON Good Grips Adjustable Temperature Pour-Over Kettle.

So where does the OXO: ON kettle fit in the world of specialty coffee pour over electric kettles: is it feature rich with good design? Is it basic, leaving you wanting? Is it an engineer nightmare to use? Is it worth the $90 or less it will cost you to buy? Let’s find out.
