Fashion is a part of coffee culture in one way or the other, but that delicious cup of coffee doesn’t look so appealing anymore now that it’s all over your clothes.

There are lots of great coffee blogs out there, but it can be hard to find information about treating coffee stains.  Here are some useful things to know.

How to Remove Coffee Stains from Fabric

Synthetic fabrics are generally more durable, but not always as resilient. They may also become permanently discolored and lose shape or structure when not treated in time. Here’s what to do:

  1. 1

Blot the coffee from synthetic fabric as you would from cotton.

  2. 2

Wash the clothing with your regular load of laundry as soon as possible.

  3. 3

Allow to soak for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

  4. 4

Dab the fabric using a damp sponge with rubbing alcohol.

  5. 5

    Remove the leftover coffee.

  6. 6

    Wash the fabric as normal.

Coffee is a bit easier to remove from cotton rather than synthetic fabric. Cotton is denser and tends to dry slower. Tough stains will take some extra work. Here’s how to treat tough stains:

  1. 1

Pour liquid fabric detergent or stain treatment and saturate the affected stain area.

  2. 2

Immerse the fabric in one quart of warm water, ½ teaspoon dish detergent, and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.

  3. 3

Repeat the process until the fabric is clean.

Give Greater Attention to Dry Coffee Stains

Coffee stains

It’s not impossible to save your clothing from permanent stains after any coffee spilled on you has dried. Follow the following treatment steps:

  1. 1

Directly apply non-bleaching, regular liquid laundry detergent or non-bleaching fabric stain treatment onto the affected area. Liquid dish soap will also help when used in place of fabric detergent or stain treatment if nothing more specifically formulated is available to use.

  2. 2

Fully penetrate the fabric with liquid laundry detergent, stain treatment or liquid dish soap.

  3. 3

Rub gently before allowing it to sit for a few hours or overnight. Alternatively, soak the clothing in cold water after treating the area. This is a faster but less effective way of removing dry coffee from fabric.

  4. 4

Keep the fabric wet then wash it in cold water.

  5. 5

    Repeat until clean.

Coffee Stain Hacks

Typical coffee stains are relatively easy to treat but for worst-case scenarios, it takes a bit more work. Here are some other ideas when simple or repeated processes don’t work:

  1. 1

Sprinkle salt over the stain to keep it from spreading. Rub salt onto the fabric with a dry cloth.

  2. 2

The same thing may be done using baking soda by rubbing it into the fabric with a damp cloth.

  3. 3

White vinegar may also be dropped directly onto the stain and blotted with dry paper towels.

  4. 4

Baby powder will prevent coffee stains from spreading. Generously dust the affected area and allow the powder to sit for several minutes before brushing it off with a dry cloth.
